Kafumu village and area is the main focus of our operation. Mercy Hands maintains a primary school with a small church on site, and serves over a hundred local children with daily food.
MERCY HANDS PRIMARY SCHOOL
Mercy Hands Primary School presently provides an education for up to 100 children who come from impoverished communities. The school aims to keep classes small enough for children to learn well. The children are fantastic and so keen to learn, with English and Sport being particularly favourite lessons.
TEACHERS LIVING AT THE SCHOOL
Teachers need to live on site as the school is far from the nearest town and travelling is difficult. The quality of education is continually improving with strong leadership from Juliette and her staff team.
In 2019 we received generous support in order to improve the teachers' accommodation.
PROVIDING DAILY FOOD
The children at Kafumu Mercy Hands Primary School receive food at lunchtime. This is usually maize porridge and occasionally a slice of bread which maybe their only nutritious meal of the day. The intention is for the school to grow its own crops to provide food in the future.
SUPPORTING OLDER PEOPLE
Mercy Hands supports older people from the communities around the school, who may also be carers for the children in the school. Here they are in one of the buildings receiving small gifts provided by MHU UK.
